The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
