Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
